Ya know, thinkingblue, you forgot one vital component. Notre Dame (which was named after the Virgin Mary) is a CATHOLIC university. It's not Texas A&M, it's not Yale, it's not University of Michigan. A Catholic university is to teach Catholic moral values, and do so in a liberal arts setting. For a university that is Catholic to teach things which fly in the face of Catholic teaching is an insult to those who founded the university. Look at Catholic University of America, Fordham, Loyola, Medaille, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ave Maria, Christendom. Universities like these that are Catholic (Fordham and Loyola are run by the Jesuits, Franciscan University by the Franciscans, TOR) cannot reject and repudiate catholic teaching and still call themselves a Catholic university. If I wanted to send my child to a Catholic university, but discovered that they were teaching beliefs in total opposition to Christian belief, I would be mighty pissed....I hope you see where I'm coming from here.... unclecharlie

I’m sorry, unclecharlie, but this guest speaker, who so many people are outraged by, just happens to be THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This title refers to the leader of ALL the people; Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, the list goes on and on and represents ‘We The People’, of this land. He was not asked by Notre Dame to speak about Catholicism, he was asked to speak and give encouragement to the graduates of this university (and there is no better person to give a speech of inspiration than Barack Obama). How lucky for these students, who will remember their guest commencement speaker for the rest of their lives.

As far as Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, etc. teachings go… if the religious principles taught, do not include tolerance, open-mindedness and empathy towards all, who share this Earth in human form then they’re not worth a damn in my book. Like you, I would be pissed but not because my child was not getting brainwashed to the point of no return. I would be pissed if he/she were not being taught the lessons of humanity, compassion and reason.
